Aquatic
Therapy
Aquatic therapy is similar to other types of therapy, except that
the patient performs rehabilitation exercises in water. The major
benefits of aquatic therapy include increased buoyancy, decreased
pain, increased range of motion, decreased swelling, and increased
circulation. Increased buoyancy helps unload the body weight off
the injured area. This helps to decrease pain associated with
weight bearing, increase range of motion, and increase circulation.
The compression of the water helps to decrease swelling and edema.
At Holzer Clinic, we have a special pool for aquatic
therapy patients. It was designed and built to maximize the benefits
of water during therapy. Our Aquatic System has variable water
depth, which is used to control weight bearing on muscles and
joints. It has a current control, used to do resistive training,
as well as a variety of workstations, which can be utilized in
variable training from static strengthening to plyometrics.
