December 8, 2010, Gallipolis, OH - Holzer Clinic Emergency Medicine Physician,
Jason Reaves, MD has successfully fulfilled the certification requirements of the American Board of
Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and is declared a diplomate of this Board.
Dr. Reaves received his medical education from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine
in Lexington, Kentucky. He completed his Residency at The Ohio State University Medical Center in
Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Reaves is certified with the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
In the early 1960’s, the population of the United States began demanding an improved quality of
care in hospital emergency departments. In response to this demand, hospitals developed full-time
emergency services dedicated to providing physicians trained in the provision of quality medical
care to patients with life or limb threatening conditions. In response to this need, a number of
physicians began limiting their practice to Emergency Medicine. In doing this, these physicians
also developed skills which would be critical to providing quality care in this environment.
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is one of 24 medical specialty boards of the
American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Founded in 1976, ABEM developed and administers
the Emergency Medicine certification examination for physicians who have met the ABEM credentialing
requirement. The first certification examination was administered in 1980. ABEM has certified
over 25,000 physicians since that time. Certification is for a period of 10 years.
In 2004, ABEM moved the periodic recertification to a program of continuous certification, a
change that was directed by the ABMS. Diplomates must participate in the Emergency Medicine
Continuous Certification (EMCC) program throughout the period of their certification if they wish
to maintain certification beyond their current certificate expiration dates.
