Gallipolis, OH - Dow Saunders, City Commissioner declares October as National Physical Therapy Month. The focus of Physical Therapy Month is to fight against obesity. " Physical activity can help fight obesity in both children and adults", says Jodi Sickels, PT, and Manager of Rehabilitation at Holzer Clinic Sycamore. "It can be a challenge to incorporate fitness into a family schedule."

One of the important roles that physical therapists play in the area of physical activity is to promote the capacity for movement in all patients. Physical therapists support the US Surgeon General’s recommendation that children receive 60 minutes if moderate physical activity most days of the week and that adults get 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise most days of the week. For people who are overweight or obese, starting with even small amounts of physical activity can help improve fitness and lower health risks.

Physical therapists are health care professionals that diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the elderly, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. Physical therapists examine each individual and develop a plan of care using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness-and-wellness oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

The rehabilitation department of Sycamore-Holzer Clinic offers physical therapy, athletic training, occupational therapy, and fitness programs including personal training, Tai Chi, and aquatic therapy.
